Math
This week we continued working on Unit 4. We are multiplying numbers larger than two digits and looking at shift patterns when we multiply by multiples of ten. We had our first quick quiz of the unit this week! Up next, we will be applying what we know about multiplication to decimal numbers!
We took a break from multiplying to preserve in a difficult math task. Can you make a 3x3x3 cube with one of nine colors on each side?
Writing/Reading
We are working on wrapping up our argument unit, which will conclude next week. Students have been working hard to research and write about an issue. Working to gather strong evidence, and putting together an argument that doesn't have flaws!
In reading, we worked on strengthening our discussions about books. Deepening our thoughts and discussions before we even read, we did a chalk talk with a picture or line from the book.
Social Studies
We have been learning about the early explorers and what they may have taken with them on board their ships as they traveled to the new world. This week, we also learned about the Columbian Exchange and the changes it caused world-wide. Students are taking a test on all this information on Monday, January 14, 2019.
Science
Coming back from break, we reviewed the four systems of Earth: biosphere, atmosphere, hydrosphere, and geosphere. Students were challenged to think of a way that the systems work together. Then we began our focus on the atmosphere. Most of us were shocked to find out that oxygen isn't the most plentiful gas in our atmosphere but that it is in fact nitrogen. We learned the importance of having a precise balance of the gases that are in our atmosphere and that we can help prevent air pollution.
