Even though it was a short week, we were very busy in fifth grade!!
Social Studies
Students spent class time working to finish up their Early English Settlements projects. They were turned in today and students will get to show them off during our Showcase event when we return from Spring Break. They look fantastic and students did a great job of explaining what is important about each of these early settlements. Next week, we will begin our studies of the 13 Colonies. Does it get any more fun than this? I am so excited!
Reading
Students continue to read their fantasy books and think about strategies to help them understand middle-level novels even better. Reading is Thinking!
Writing
Students finished up drafting a literary essay on the Paynee FC football club video. We are preparing to write our next literary essay on a text we've read in class!
Math
We continued to divide with decimals and whole number this week!
Science
This week we studied ocean currents a bit more! We read a great book that taught us all about erosion. Then, we saw some video clips that helped explain how ocean currents move! Another awesome part of this week was that Mrs. Palma's class had multiple 5th grade science teachers in the Troy School District observe them in a future science lesson. These teachers are adopting the new science curriculum early this year, just like us! All of the teachers were so impressed with models that they drew and their science talk!

February 11-15
Reading
Students reflected on themselves as book club members. We talked about how to raise the level of our book clubs to make them the BEST they can be! Many students are already enjoying the second book in their fantasy series.
Writing
We continued to work on literary essays this week. We wrote multiple thesis' on the Paynee FC Football story before choosing one. Then we organized our thinking to collect evidence that supports our reasons. Finally, we began to flash draft our literacy essay argument using all we know about what makes a good literary essay!
Math
This week students worked hard to divide! We discussed what to do with our remainders in story problems.
Sometimes with remainders we...
1. Round up
2. Ignore
3. Include it as a fraction
4. Include it as a decimal
5. Keep the remainder as the answer.
Social Studies
Students are busy working on putting together their Early English Settlements Projects. They were invited to take them home over the long weekend, if they chose to. It is due on Friday, February 22, 2019. Work time will be provided in class for students to continue working on their projects this coming Wednesday - Friday, February 20 - 22. It is highly recommended that students do some work at home so that their in class time is used wisely! Can't wait to see the finished projects. See picture below for a sample from previous years!
Science
This week, we continued to learn about our water use. We found out how much water we use in a single hand washing and were able to apply this information to the world around us. Students came up with ideas of how to keep the small amount of fresh water that we have on Earth both clean and plentiful. After focusing on fresh water, we shifted gears and brought our focus to the largest part of the hydrosphere, the ocean. We read all about the Nike cross-trainers that went over board in the ocean and found it to be crazy that decades later, they're still showing up on our shores! Students created models about how they think ocean currents move. Then, were surprised to find that they actually move in a circular pattern. We took this information and applied it to what was happening with the shoes. Next week, we will continue learning about the hydrosphere before moving on to the biosphere!

February 4 - 8, 2019
Reading - students are well into their books (or even their second book in the series!) with their book clubs. Students are leading rich conversations with their groups to deepen their understanding of what is happening in their stories. Be sure to ask your student about his or her book!
Writing - Students have started drafting their literary essays on the video we saw in class about the Panyee Football club. This inspirational video is helping students to write about themes and messages found in literature. Next week, students will be selecting picture books to write a literary essay about. Can't wait to see what they come up with!
Check out the video here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jU4oA3kkAWU
Social Studies- We are learning about the Early English Settlements of Roanoke, Jamestown, and Plymouth. Be sure to ask you student about each of them. They are such great stories! We will be constructing a project on these settlements. Look for information to come home today. A parent signature and rough draft planning are due by Wednesday, February 13, 2019. We will be displaying these projects at Spring Showcase for everyone to see! They always turn out great so I can't wait for you to see each students final product!
Math - This week, students took their Unit 4 math test! Corrections and signature on this test will be due on Wednesday, February 13th. Please look at it with your child and celebrate their accomplishments, as well as assist them with any corrections they may have.
We began our next unit on Division! We are off to a great start.
Science- We began learning about the hydrosphere this week. Students have learned about the availability and percentage of fresh water on Earth (which is quite low!). In class, we set up investigations to see the amount of water we use when we wash our hands. From there, we'll see how much we use in our classroom. A note and family homework assignment went home today to try to include the amount of water used at home. Please work with your child to tally the amount of times water is used ONE day this weekend. (Be sure to tally if you use water, even if you go out to eat or something!)
