May 27-31, 2019

Social Studies- We wrapped up our discussion and learning about the Patriots and the Loyalists this week.  Students took their final test for the year on Thursday, May 30, 2019.   We also had some time to watch more episodes of Liberty's Kids.  These videos do a wonderful job of teaching younger learners about the events of the American Revolution and the historical figures who helped to shape our country.

Writing - Students are spending writing time composing memoirs!  They are reflecting on events in their life and how they fit together under a similar theme.  Some are writing about how family is always there for you and others are writing about how it is important to step out of your comfort zone.   All writers are doing a great job of connecting, reflecting, and writing!

Science- Students took on the role of a botanist, studying plants very closely. We noticed the differences in the two plant types that we planted (beans and marigolds) and thought about why they might have those differences in order to survive. From there, students were able to pinpoint the purpose of each of the plant parts (roots, stem, leaves, and flower/seeds). We also learned about the Giant Sequoia Trees in California. One tree has been alive for 3,500 years!

Reading- We've really enjoyed listening to our read aloud, Bloomability by Sharon Creech. Students are learning that fiction books, newspaper articles, magazines, and nonfiction books often contain social issues. Taking a closer look at the social issues helps us see into the lives of others and have empathy for them. They can be a reflection of our own lives, too.

Math- Students took a quick quiz that focused on the order of operations. It is so important to be sure that we show our steps so that we don't accidentally forget something!
