Writing- now that we've chosen a more focused topic within Westward Expansion, we were reminded that we can use informational texts as mentor texts and can learn from them. We also talked about the rare opportunity to study primary sources but that we can gather quite a bit of information from them if we look hard enough. Students learned how to structure their informational essays and got to work with collecting more information and/or drafting. As students continued to research, they were reminded to think of view points of people that might not be the most obvious during that time. Some students were able to find shocking information to add to their essays!
Reading- our reading continues to mirror what we're doing in writing. Much of the reading we do allows us to write about our focus topic! This week we also learned how to change an accessibility feature on our iPads that reads challenging websites aloud (like an audiobook) so that we can still gather the potentially important information.
Math- With our word problems, we are focusing on what information we need to solve the problems and ignoring information that is unnecessary. Some of the problems don't have enough information for us to solve them! Our Unit 6 test is on Monday, May 20th. The review for the journal has been assigned and is due next Thursday, May 16th.
Science- this week we answered a few more of our questions from our driving question board by reading a portion of a book about food chains and food webs. Most of us had never heard of these terms before!
